Bore light alternative
« on: December 09, 2014, 07:26:20 PM »
I learned on another site about an alternative bore light to the ones we usually buy at muzzleloader sites.
It can be found at O'Reilly's automotive stores and is the "SuperRay" LED technology light for about $12.
It is smaller in diameter than the bore light I purchased at one of the muzzleloader shops and looks like it will fit down a .36 cal. I have used it in a .45 cal flintlock.
If there is any problem with it, it is too bright to look at down the bore. I found a piece of gray, translucent plastic that was a report cover, cut a very small, round piece, and put it over the LED.
Walla (Voila, Viola - my French is very poor)! It is very effective. In my .50 and .54 cal muzzleloaders, I can put it in the barrel light first and still see the walls of the bore.

Great idea.  I have one that I made from a tiny flashlight that was attached to a Chinese-made combination tool (like a Leatherman)  It will slip down a .40 cal bore easily.  It too was too bright, so my clever brother simply put a disc of masking tape over the lens, and as you say, "Voila".  As far as usefulness of a bore light, a bore would have to be pretty bad to be able to comment on the bore's condition.  I find that even a not so good bore looks pretty good with just a bore light.  Now, a bore scope....that's another fish.

I agree that a bore light really is a "screening method" to identify a badly fouled bore and not the end-all in telling us the bore condition.

I bought one of those el cheapo, $25 Chinese made, bore scopes. The image on my computer varies from poor to horrid, but it has been very helpful. I was able to see corrosion and mild pitting in what I had previously identified as a beautifully clean bore. I have used it to make certain that a recently purchased, used muzzleloader was indeed unloaded. Also, I was able to seen a mini-Goblin who was smearing corrosive salts on the bore down by the flash hole after I had supposedly finished cleaning the bore. ;) ;D

Been looking for those and haven't run across them yet.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Those are identical to the O'Reilly Automotive lights except that the O'Reilly lights are $11.99.

These are the bobber lights that Tim is talking about. They are very thin and will fit down the barrel of a .22 cal. I've been using these since 2003 and really like them. They come in three different colors. Red, Green & Yellow. The Green and Yellow work best. They last for many, many uses. Gander Mountain has these also and you get free shipping for the holidays.

Thanks dogface, that's exactly what I've been looking for, and just ordered some!!! Thought I'd pick them up, but there's no Gander Mountain within 250 miles of me, but as you said, right now it's free shipping.
