need help- ID American percussion musket
« on: September 16, 2011, 11:41:47 PM »
A friend sent me pictures.  The lock has the date 1834 and Conn. on it.

Maybe a model 1816 Springfield converted to percussion?  But he says the barrel bands are brass.

It's a U.S. Model 1816 69 cal flint, converted to percussion by the Belgian alteration. Bunches were done like this at the start of the CW so you yanks could fit with us Southern boys.  All we had was pitchforks and rocks!

Lookin at the pic looks as if two or three inches have been sliced off the barrel.  I've never seen one with brass bands, maybe replaced?

That one look's like it has been used good bit. I have been trying to find one for a while but you don't see many of them in Texas. I agree it looks like the end of the barrel might have been shortened a little bit, it may have got dented on the end of the barrel so the shortened it that is fairly common.

As-is, it's a wall-hanger or a parts-gun.  Depending on what the owner wants to do with it, an original stock and barrel, in better condition, can probably be found and fitted-up with the remaining parts, to make a better looking wall hanger.

The barrel looks very pitted....but you might  be  able to see  proof marks and inspectors initials....if they are there you can date the musket by them.

It looks as if the Yanks were trying to copy the Rebs.

There were several US contract plus independent makers of the M1816 from Conn. The 1834 date might suggest N. Starr. There were probably more markings on the lock if you can make them out. The brass bands might suggest naval use?
