Try doing a search, there were some nice pictures of guns made by David Boyer a while back you might like. Try David Boyer schimmels in Antique gun collecting.

Actually "Schimmel" has several meanings in German. Mold or fungus is one of them and comes up first on an internet search "Schimmel German". I used to work with a guy named Schimmel and he visited Germany and learned what his name meant :o.

Bill, I don't know offhand of any pictures, but if you live anywhere near Chuck Dixon's shop in Kempton, PA, he has a couple hanging on the wall there.

The first gun I ever saw of this type was back in the early 70's.   Bob Hoyt showed up at a shoot with this real plain gun,
no buttplate, no side plate, no entry pipe or nose cap, he called it a "poor boy".    Then Chuck Dixon created the name
"schimmel" for the same type of gun.  I don't think there ever was a gunbuilder by this name, however there was an
itinerant wood carver by that name, carved all kinds of animals to pay for food and lodging.   These wood carving have
now become very valuable folk art collectibles.   These plain guns have now taken on a new name, "barn gun", have no
idea of where this started.    I have made a lot of them and this is the description I prefer to use.  The name "D. Boyer"
has come up quite frequently.   He worked in Berks county and apparently built a lot of them.  I know of one locally but
have not been able to buy it............Don

I think the first guy to build these plain guns was Barney Schimmel. You can call a plain gun by his first or last name, whatever suits your style. Don Getz is a first name kind of guy.

There are some German guns with no metal furniture, so the buttplate, guard, sideplate, thimbles, etc, are all made of wood. But this is hardly a money or time saving trick, it is really a gunstocker's joke, and a way to show his/her skills. The buttplate is carved from the same piece as the stock, and is all faceted and engraved to replicate a metal plate.
