Jacob Sell
This just happened across my path and I couldn't pass it up. Kind of like Mr.Parkers favorite junk shop! The rifle is an overall 59.75", the barrel is exactly 43" and is 54 cal. smoothbore. I did not measure the pull but I would guess around 13-13.5". The rifle is carved in high relief at the tang, it is incised at the wrist and to the rear of the cheek rest as well as to the rear of the rear ramrod pipe. The moulding extends from the butt to the trigger guard as well as from the muzzle to the rear entry pipe. The wood has minimal curl in various places but the grain is very interesting. It is a beautiful piece of wood, the segments of grain are different tones and do not run parallel with the rifle. The patchbox is your typical Sell with the bird finial. The toe plate and the patchbox are both elaborately engraved in Sell fashion and has the typical oblong release at the rear of the upper patchbox plate. The rifle is unsigned, but has all of the characteristics of Jacob Sells work. I believe Kindig said that common characteristics of a maker are his best signature. This rifle has them all. The barrel is a deep brownish purple and I do not feel it necessary to search for a signature. Enjoy!

I have been looking at that finial and one moment it looks like a horse and the next it looks like a bird, maybe one of the gents can clear that one up.

Bolster on that lock has got to be much thinner than the typical locks on the market today. Can you tell us how thick it is?

Thanks for posting the pictures. It was like seeing an old friend. I owned that rifle about twenty years ago. Looks exactly the same.

Thank you, I had sold a couple of rifles to a Gentleman and he happened to have this with him and it caught my eye. I looked at it and it kept talking to me, even my wife said the same thing when she came out to talk with us. I tried to walk away from it several times but, well you know. It's a great piece.

That's a possibility, I thought maybe even a dragon. If you look at 179 in "Thoughts" that looks like a horse. The nose on this is very thin, maybe a fox or a wolf?

Dr. Boone,
The Bolster is a fuzzzzzz more than a 1/4" not quite 9/32". Thats from the barrel to the edge of the Bolster on the horizntal plane.

Very nice rifle, thank you for sharing the pictures Buck. There are a few other patchbox finials similar to yours out there, I think Schroyer also used them. I always thought that they looked like a stylized doe head. By the way, I also like the Phil Lucas rifle stand!

Ok Buck, thanks, I am not sure we are measuring the same thing.. I measured the thickness of the bolster from its inside flat (that lays against the barrrel...to the inside of the lockplate......

So on modern locks I have it varies from 9/32" to a hair over 1/8" to 1/4"

I like the slenderness of the gun at the breech and that is hard to do id the bolster is on the thick side.....

I think I got it right. From the barrel flat to the inside of the lock plate I have 3/16".
