Reserch assistance.
« on: November 09, 2011, 11:29:36 PM »
Hi all, I plan on building a rifle from a kit. I have acquired most of my tools, and I am looking for any reading material I can get on the rifles made in the south during the 1830-1850 period. I will be getting my parts a piece at a time so have plenty of time to read, I am just looking for the names of some of the guys who built the iron mounted rifles that would have been owned and used by everyday folks. Any online resources that feature photos of the guns would be great as well as any books you could recommend. And anything on gun makers in Alabama around the same time would be greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance for any input you have to offer, and hope you guys have a good evening.

Jerry Noble has published three volumes on Southern rifles, mostly from the time frame of your interest.  If southern rifles are your interest, you really need Jerry's books.

Thanks. I am hunting them down now. I cant wait until I get to start building my gun. I have wanted to do this since I was about 14. Considering I'm 37 now I figure its about time to get started.

You might want to look into the work of the Bull family, more specifically John Bull, who worked in Tennesse until the late 1820s then moved to the Warrior Mountain Alabama area.

Jerry Noble actually has 4 volumes, and I think there is at least one other Alabama rifle in there (Jacob Stutz) in Volume 4.  It may also be shown in Volume 2 as well - I can't recall.

As a start, there are a number of great examples of iron mounted southern rifles that fall into that timeframe in the "Virtual Musuem" - look under "southern longarms" and "unknown makers - iron mounted."

For some fun contemporary examples, go to this link at the "contemporary makers blog spot" -

Also on that site, do a search for  "Andy Mock", and "Ian Pratt" to name a few others.

Good luck.

You can contact Jerry Noble easiest by phone, He's super low tech.  No PC, no email, no web site, he may not even have a cell phone, but his books are reasonable, and great resources.  His phone number is 309-582-2852 Call in the evening.   His address is

If you are serious when you say South then you must also see Wayne Elliott's book on Georgia rifles. Includes guns by Wiley Higgins , Richard Allen and others. You can send him a PM :  http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1168

know that feeling well.  i'm lucky to have a grand old builder not too awful far away who is helping me along.  great thing about being 25 years behind the time-line from the get-go (two or three years just buying parts here), is that you shouldn't feel the need to rush anything.

I'm all tore up (that's Southern) about my _next_ rifle(s) to build.  Am logging now and get all worked up about the standing maple i have (the interesting wood that the mills don't want you know).

Hey, while were at it and to stay on topic, could you fellows who have been studying the rifles of this region for many years post a pic or two and comment upon them.  I'm sure some folks have seen enough originals to write a book and have read many books and have formed some of their own opinions and those I'd like to hear-right here on the interweb.

Or is that just too controversial?

Also, I'm going to hit Mr. Anderson's library next time I get down there.  Are there any out-of-print books that I should look for while I'm there.  Pretty sure he has everything printed on the subject in the last 50 years or so.

Im pretty serious. I am drawn to the fact that you dont hear about them much and lately I have found that I live in a spot that was home to a good many gun builders from Galveston to Beaumont, and I got all that from the mere mention of a book title ! So, I have had to slow it down again and focus on collecting my reading material. I am still anxious to get cracking on my project what ever it turns out to be. I have about 6 books I have my eye on and three I need to locate.
