My complements !! All the neat things have already been said. I will say that your rifle photos find their way unto my computer screen as backgrounds and screen savers. The cheek piece photo will be my next background. I never tire of looking at this quality.

Stunning. What I like , in addition to everything else, is the uniqueness of the carving. Absolutely original. Like Mike Brooks, I think the patchbox area is a little overdone. In and of itself, it's brilliant, but artistically overwelms the rest of the rifle.
The fowler, vastly fancier, is balanced from stem to stern. Masterpiece.

My own gun making claims are that I can take $600 or more worth of parts and make the best $40 rifle on the range.

This is one masterfully done rifle. The carving looks surreal. The whole package defies words to describe its beauty. Should I win the lottery, I will look for you to build me a left-handed rifle with some of the same features. You are one gifted fellow!!!!

A few thoughts... Although I'm happy with both of these guns, both could have been done better. There is always room for improvment. I can look at both and see things that could be improved upon. This is what it takes to get better. Part of this is personal preference and what is accustomed to being seen but other aspects are more universal. I know enough to not to be too openly critical when trying to sell my work

, but I will say that I'm fairly happy with the lock side on the rifle, but might tweak a few things on the cheek side. This is the process. If something is good, it usually didin't come easy! Everybody has their motivations for building. For me, it's probably as simple as trying to create something that is beautiful and has that appeal.

As I said before, if you think I can be of assistance, just ask. I don't post much here anymore, but am still happy to help.

Impeccable craftsmanship and clean lines. A contemporary longrifle artwork that stands in its own space, almost ethereal. I also note (and believe) that Jim isn't over the moon happy with it: He's far too humble, which as far as I know from my brief encounters with him is his only abiding fault. There's always next time to perfect his vision, but my poor old uneducated eyes are not able to find any technical flaws on this one, and I know in my heart that it is waste of time looking.

I think you guys are being a little too complimentary though. I do try and want to keep learning and improving.

The fowling piece has a custom made lock. With the recent discussions of lock making, thought some might like to see this lock. The photos are of it in the un-engraved state. Don't have any of it finished. Although I made every part, I used modern machining methods. Any questions just ask!

Beautiful looking lock,Jim! I love the subtle details like the way you shaped the inside of the mainspring bend just like high quality originals. Not very many catch those small details that make things look just right!

I'd be happy to Leatherbelly, but this is all I have. I should at some point get a full set of photos, and will probably send they to Art and Jan to be included on the blog. By the time I finish a gun, I'm usually so tired of looking at it that I sometimes don't even have the motivation to get pictures taken.

The obvious interest and discernment you exhibited in class this summer indicates a greater appreciation of art form than most of us will ever achieve. And it is clearly exhibited in your work.
