Really long ramrods
« on: November 28, 2011, 01:51:13 AM »
I have a 56in. long barrel for a Hudson Valley fowler. Anyone know a source for 3/8 or 7/16 ramrods that long or do I start my search for a hickory tree.

try www. dowelsondemand.com  This gent is in Canada and ships what you want and the asks for a check.  The most trusting guy I have ever dealt with.  He has some very exotic woods available.  I have made many fancy tapered rosewood ramrods with buffalo tips using his wood.   I recently bought 48 inch 5/8 rosewood dowel from him for an English made market fowler.

Just checked the dowels on demand site.  He has had some health issues but is accepting email orders but requests patience.

Nate, you might try Larry Zornes / Mold and Gun Shop, I have been buying some 5 foot hickory rods from him, nice quality. They are 7/16 or 1/2, can't recall right at the moment.

I gave upon commercial made rods, too crappy Through Roy Strohs proding I split my own now. Lots of work but very happy with the results.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I think in the amount of time it takes to find a commercial one you can make several and have your own desired shape. They are pretty easy to make. I just go to the local lumber mill and pick out a straight grained air dried hickory board; about an inch thick

Easier than a lumber yard, go to Woodcrafters and get a straight-grained 1/2" hickory plank and rip out 1/2" square blanks. Take 'em down with a hand plane. Shape 'em any way you like. More expensive wood than a lumberyard...but not much.
