Smooth pistol barrel
« on: December 06, 2011, 05:15:43 PM »
Perhaps the wrong thread.... I am looking for a smooth pistol barrel 40 - 45 cal for a client. He is a competitive shooter at national level and want me to quite on building him a flint lock smooth barrel target pistol which must be a copy of an original.

And while at it: some recommendations regarding a good lock and a set trigger will be appreciated.

Thanks

He wants a smooth bore target pistol with a set trigger thats a copy of an original. ???I know there is no accounting for some customers requests. They are the ones paying the bill so......     As far as locks go I like Cambers late Ketland and a Lepage set trigger to top it off.  Good luck with the project and post your progress it will be cool to see.

I have a section of GM 40x13/16 that can be reamed to about a .410-.420. The Chambers Ketland is a fine rfle lock but too big for a pistol. I have made some good pistol locks for the German market, nice looking, fast and about the same configuration as the L&R small Manton. I no longer make them but can use the external parts for the L&R,fitted internally with a benchcrafted mechanism.

I have no idea about a single set trigger. They are a labor intensive device and I haven't made on for 30 years.

International competitions have a category for smooth bore pistols. Properly loaded and in the hands of a good shooter, they work about as well as the rifled ones at 25 meters.
I have made locks to be used on this type of pistol for a number of Europeans over a period spanning 32 years.

Quote:"He want's a smooth bore target pistol with a set trigger that's a copy of an original???" Only smooth bores and snap shooting were allowed by the dueling code at one time - lots of fine pistols were made as hair triggered smooth bores!
