Looking through Clay Bedford’s collection I would have to say that it looks like probably 4 to 1 , flat to peaked checkering
A dueling set made by Joseph Manton in 52 cal shows peaked checkering in probably 18 count . Dated 1797 (Bedford 1161)
I should also not that there is a Wesley Richards in the collection with the longer checkering that’s also peaked and dates to 1812 (Bedford 1142)
But again predominantly on at least earlier pieces , flat top or at least a modified checkering with flat top does seem to be most common
