Patch Box dimensions
« on: December 14, 2011, 07:37:53 PM »
I really like the Beck Whaletail PB design. I have used it on two rifles and have plans to use it again. To the best of my calculations based on redimensioning photos from the web, I figure the door to be 1-3/8" wide. Does anyone have access to an original that they can measure? Or does my calculation work pretty well. Just trying to get a little closer to the things that I have control of. Thanks
Micah

If you happen to understand how to search this forum (I've not a clue) this was discussed a year or so back, I gave dimensions for a few originals.
Info not to hand now.

I give up after about 35 minutes of searching I found disscussions about Becks rivets and lettering on his barrels and a few other things I wasn't looking for. I guess I flunk the searc test again. :-[

Guys, I think Micah is asking about the patchbox lid.... JCKelly gave him the hole dimensions int the prior thread.

You might have better luck drawing the design out on the stock, figuring how the overall size should be to your stock, then decide on the door size.  I've been working on a patchbox for my rifle and thought that 1-3/8" would be a good size till I laid it out, decided I needed to downsize everything to fit the way I wanted, ended up around 1-18" wide.  You can also make photo copies of varing sizes to see how it will fit and base your door width from that.

Roger that.
Was thinking there is probably a reasonably close relationship between hole width and door width.
But perhaps not..... ?

Scale a patchbox to fit the buttstock and the lid will be the right width.
MAKE IT SO IT LOOKS RIGHT.
No matter what it measures if it looks out of place its WRONG.

Seems to me that the whale tail Beck box doors might be a bit wider than expected....
I know a guy with one so gimme a few days and I'll email him and see if I can get the info.

Micah, I see that you got your answer.
I assume you've looked at the whale tail Beck in the forum Library as well?

Actually John I was still waiting for your information.

I'm not trying to make a big deal out of this, but since I'm starting a new Beck rifle and I'm planning to use a whale tail PB I thought I could get more precise measurements. I have proportionally scaled photos (as well as I can) that came from the forum library of different rifles with the whale tail patchbox based on buttplate height and have come up with a measurement of "about" 1-3/8" for the width of the door. A gent on  this forum emailed me dimensions of a Beck pb he owns but it wasn't a whale tail design. The width info he sent was 1-1/4' wide for the door. I'm happy with the dimensions I have but since Beck seemed to be a creature of habit with his hardware at least I was only wondering if he had some consistancy with his patchbox dimensions regardless of finial style.

Micah, Check your PM or email.
However, from him, the measurements are 1.250" wide, and 3.70" long, measured from the center of the hinge pin to the center of the door at the butt plate.
I think this is the same rifle in the library.

If I'm reading yall correctly, as long as the proportions ar correct, and it looks good it's right, Right?

I just thought that someone (don't matter who) that does this regularly would have templates, being that templates are employed sizes would be the same from unit to unit. Although I'm no expert on Beck, I have noticed that he used similar hardware and designs throughout his career. It just seemed sensible that he would use same dimensions on similar patchbox designs.
