The rifle is 51 and 1/2" overall. It has a 36" barrel and it is 57 cal.
Comments:
I believe the initials may be JS. Based on the similarities to another rifle this might indicate Joseph Schaefer. His rifles are often confused with those of Joe Long but there are subtle differences. Have a look in the Library and see what I mean. Look especially at the carving.
The barrel on this rifle has almost certainly been cut at the breach. I somewhat question the flint ignition as the rifle is fairly late and percussion would be more expected. Whether I'm correct or not in this matter is rather unimportant.
