Is this really Henry Leman???
« on: January 31, 2012, 05:46:16 AM »
Another high end half stock is offered at Morphy's in this February auction. It is ,,at least in part identified by the name on the lock. I am wondering whther that is sufficient for this particular ID on this gun becuase of the quality of the artistic work. Would those ( students of Leman) who know much of the spectrum of Leman's work comment as the quality of the "artistic" workmanship resembles some of the finer Phildephia makers. Would a Leman lock appear on guns of others? The likely person who described this gun in the auction information is a recognized, knowledgeable, respected collector; I am just unfamiliar with the spectrum of Leman's work and wish to learn more.

Leman built rifles in three phases. A general shop that produced rifles of  standardized pattern of very good quality, the Conestoga Rifle Works that produced cheap rifles,  and the custom shop.

The custom shop might add details to a production rifles or build entirely custom rifles of the finest quality. There is a rifle in the Lanc. Historial Society that is as good or better than the one pictured.

Leman made locks for sale .  Having a Leman lock does not make it a Leman.  Having a Leman stamp on lock and barrel does. Without it the attribution is spurious.

Rifle surely is, the sights and false muzzle?
