Left-Hand Kit for Rupp, Shuler, Verner, Moll?
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:36:37 AM »
I am still dreaming and saving for my first real rifle build. I originally thought I wanted to build an Isaac Haines rifle from a Jim Chambers kit, but then more recently I have become enamored with the slender, svelte lines and longer barrels of makers such as Rupp, Verner, Shuler and Moll. I also like the look of some of the John Armstrong and J. Dickert rifles that I have seen (especially the J. Dickert with the old Germanic lock and trigger set).

The challenge is finding an outfit that provides component sets for these styles with locks on the left-hand side, since I am a southpaw. I was thinking of giving Tip Curtis a call to see if he can provide a left-hand component sets (with the lock and barrel inlet). Anyone have any idea if he carries these sorts of models in LH, or where else I can find them?

Many thanks,

Kevin

Call Tip Curtis 615-654-4445.  Tip carries some left handed preshaped and inlet rifle stocks.  Sorry, I am not sure what schools he has, but he probably has more left handed stocks available than anyone.

Kevin,

While not among your maker list, you may want to consider Jim Klein's Peter Berry kit.  It comes in right or left hand and it's a nice slender rifle.  This was my first build and Jim was very helpful answering all my rookie questions.

His website is: www.jklongrifles.com

I second the Jim Klein vote. I have one of the Peter Berr'ys and it is a wonderful light slender gun... wonderful deer hunter.

I'm currently in the middle of a left handed Dave Keck stock. I'm very pleased with the quality of the wood. I wanted a Lehigh stock, but at the time of purchase..(last February) the closest profile he had in a left hand was a Bucks county style stock. After carving down the slightly higher comb / nose area by the wrist I was able to very closely match the lines of a true Lehigh. I'm happy so far with my progress even at the snails pace I'm progressing. With it's graceful curve along the bottom of the butt stock and the radius curve I added under the trigger guard area, she's lookin' more and more like the beloved Lehigh I always wanted. I only hope by the time I'm ready to build my next gun Keck WILL have a true Lehigh profile in a southpaw version. ;)

That's encouraging, Brad. Good luck with your build and may it be the rifle you are hoping for!
