Just an FYI:   I noted in an older thread that fingernail emery boards can be trimmed and used for detail sanding and metal polishing.   I went to the drug store and bought a few---and they work great.   I was telling my cousin (and his fiancee) about this over the weekend---he's working on a Chamberlin fowler kit.   the finacee tipped me off to check out a chain of beauty supply shops (often found in strip mall) called "Sally's".   SO I stopped in one today.

Great selection everything form 80 grit up to 600, waterproof, washable and reusable in boards and pads of various sizes as well a semi-flexible blocks like small sanding blocks----and most are less than half the price of the drugstore's very small selection.

So If you can handle a few strange looks, visit your local beauty shop supply

Great tip!  Now I have a reason to go into the Sally store with my wife.  I can pick up some more nail polish for the bamboo fly rod repair project too.  I always hit the fabric store by myself.

A related tip - the Sally's near me is located next to an artist supply store which stocks all sorts of stuff in small quantities and high quality.  For example some very high grades of linseed oil, and various varnish and dryers can be found there.  

My big giggle at the beauty supply store is the staff clearly does not use their products!!  Probably because they aren't paid enough to afford the stuff.  Of course they look at me an probably think "Not much we are going to be able to do to help this guy"!  But despite that observation, the nose and ear hair clippers are some assistance.  Every wonder why a bald man grows hair like crazy in weird places like ears and neck?  God has a weird sense of humor I think.

  Nail polish will tighten up a loose screw too,the deep cleansing shampoo is good to remove grease from a stock.

Mark, that could be in your case but I haven't tried to restore anything.  You best be careful not to get that stuff mixed up with your viagra - might get hair to stiff to comb!  (stole that from a recent video someone posted on here I think).

Many, many years ago I tried the emory board route.  Found out they don't work too well, at least the ones I used.  If you must sand carving background, I think it's better to use adhesive sandpaper and attach to bits of thin plastic etc.  Now, with that said,  a strong case could be made for no sanding at all.

Jim the old sandpaper-ish grit and cardboard ones don't work too well as you found out. I tried them years ago in a college sculpture class.  somebody suggested them back then and they were ok--kind of --on easy-to-access surfaces but useless on small complex detail areas.
  these newer ones are different.  they are on some sort of hard but flexible plastic and the grist is much better attached you can wash them off, let them dry and use them again several times.  A whole world different that the old style.  the fine ones feel almost like the little diamond grit plastic-paddle knife sharpeners--but flexible and a WHOLE lot less expensive.
