I build two at the same time when I build a rifle.  I got tired of a client asking for a second rod AFTER the rifle had left the shop....as if I could buy one at the hardware store.

If you build a spare rod do you have to spoil a spare child?  Pete you might try the leather dye anyhow, it will cut through some stock finishes, it may work after a kerosene soak too

If I'm understanding you correctly I would use fiebings(sp) leather die in chocalate brown.

Yep, dark brown leather dye.

Yep, it works through the kerosine/LO bath (drowning) I give them as soon as I get them in my shop. No problem staining treated rods.
