What he said above - hardwood end grain works REALLY well. With some really sharp gouges, you can use a bunch of wood chunks and cut yourself a bunch of different sized half round/ladle type depressions in the end grain and they'll hold up for a good while as long as you keep annealing the brass to keep it soft.
