TEFLON TICKING

in my heavy bench shooting days we used teflon ticking with good sucess
question has anyone used it in a 45 cal flintlok without any problems??

It is liquid "Teflon" which comes fron Dupont and is sprayed onto the patching by the yard.
I use to use a paint sprayer. They and I been using it for over 40 years.

 I use it in my .45 X1-66 X 1 1/2 X 48 Douglas barrel with no problem. Clean with water and lube the bore with bear fat . I run a wet patch down the barrel after each shot .Now if I had a new set of eyes I would be in high cotton. Will give it a go at the York shoot this comming Saturday.

Teflon worksfine and shoots v well in my .45 ;but I must wipe the bore at least every third shot .

It'll shoot fine,  but it will build up in the bore.  I've tried it a couple of differnt times and never liked it for that reason, and that I can get equal accuracy with liquid lube.   I have a friend who did a fairly extensive accuracy test with teflon ticking shooting it with the teflon against the bore and also against the ball and his results showed no difference in accuracy either way.  His thinking on lubes is that they dont "lubricate" at all,  but only serve to help seal the bore and protect the patch from powder gasses.  I tend to agree.

Teflon and muzzle loaders to me are about as compatible as wire wheels and whitewalls on a stage coach.

I know in the BPCR crowd there is a whole phobic school of shooters that NEVER mix ANY petrochemical based components in projectile lubrication when shooting with BP.   I guess it causes real hard-to-remove fouling problems ruins bores and brings on the apocalypse or something like that.   Maybe thats a simply a function of higher pressures with heavier bullets and the fact that they don't wipe/scrape the bore in the process of loading

kool,  I've got 4 or 5 yards of silk laying around.   Oh yeah it old ww2 surplus naval powder bag silk.   they used it 'cause it'd burn up totally.   guess that wouldn't d make good patching material unless maybe I could slick it on both sides with teflon.   might be so slick I could skip the main charge and just use a heathy prime

 lot of top target shootewr use teflon. i use it in my getz 45 cal  flint chunk rifle and my other target guns.when done shooting run the old bronze brush down the barrel 6 times . no build up no problems.
wayne lamson of  teflon tough patch fame recomended birchwood casey bore cleaner that looked like steel wool. he put note in every package

thanks for your input, we used a mixture of mr kleen,water,water soluable oil
i used this for about 6 years on my heavy bench rifle with no problems,
i'm just worried about keeping things dry for the flintlock

I know jerry, great guy.  I bought 2 rifles off of him.  He sold the teflon part of his business to someone else from what he had said.  This was a couple of years ago.  The contact info on the web was to the other guy and I bought some stuff off of him last year.  Tried to order more but email and phones are off.  Will give jerry a call and see what he has to say

Years ago I tried Teflon coated ticking in a number of barrels but I just couldn't get it to work.

I know it can work cause a lot of very successful shooters use it and win with it but I couldn't get the stuff to work for me. I still have yards of it in a drawer in the basement.

I know it's not traditional but I've been using Teflon patching for years because I"ve never found it's equal with regular patching/lube combinations. The quality of Teflon patching also varies but the best I've used and still use is Wayne Lamson's Tough Ass patching. It really lives up to it's name. When I first started using it I tried shooting a standard six bull off the bench at fifty yards using the same patch over and over to see how it stood up. The first three shots were tens and the fourth was a nine. Unfortnately I lost the patch in the grass and couldn't continue but by that point it was only a little frayed around the edge. That's good enough for government work! It should be noted that I use a very tight patch ball combination that has to be driven into the bore with a small mallet which wouldn't be acceptable in the field. However, since I only shoot targets it's not a problem. I should also mention that I always wipe between every shot using Shooter's  Choice Blackpowder Cleaning Gel followed by a dry wipe which leaves a slightly slick coating on the bore which seems to help drive the ball home. Wayne's patching is made from a light canvas that mikes out at .022" which seems thick but I use it in everything from .36 to .50 selecting the appropriate ball and it has given me many many half inch five shot groups at fifty yards off the bench. Tip Curtis sells a Teflon patching material at Friendship that appears to be made from the same material however the coating doesn't appear to be as thick and even.
