Got a barrel, need suggestions
« on: May 02, 2012, 08:17:01 PM »
Guys,

I've got a nice Burton barrel, 44", 1 1/16" straight in .47 caliber.  Besides a chunk style rifle, what could I credibly use this barrel for?  Thanks.

What did you have in mind when you bought it?

Make a 36"-38" barrel for a Hawken and use the other 6-8" for a Hawken pistol.

1.  Cut 8" off it and make a matched pistol/rifle combo in Hawken or Plains style.
2.  It's a chunk barrel.....chunk it into the Classified forum and see if anyone bites.
3.  Use it as a gate post.
4.  Why did you buy it?   ;)

Swamp it with a file. ;D
A Connistoga Bear rifle from Leman comes to mind.
Or one of those Norwegien backwoods Snaplocks without a butt, just a cheek rest, like they must have had on the Delaware when New Sweden brought all of those Ostrabothnian Finns to PA in the 1600s.

1. Get it bored out and rifled into a larger caliber.
2. Send it back and get it swamped.

Is .20" about the minimum thickness for a breech wall?  Assume 12L14 steel for a rifled barrel.  Possibly a smoothie.

...or trade it back to Charlie for a 44", "B" weight .45. Big enough for Mulies, whities, Shiras moose, you know-the little ones. A great trail rifle! School?...a Southern Mtn.,Virginy,,a nw Tenn,a Beck,Haines,Lanc,York...pretty much any kind you want. Kibler or Pratt cobble up some real nice gonnes! Geez, that reminds me, I gotta chat with Ian soon. He knows an up and coming builder whose work is dazzling! Good luck Ez.

Just to let you know it shoots really good so I wouldn't mess with the inside at all!
