any Lehigh Butt plate inletting tips
« on: January 18, 2015, 01:38:47 AM »
Never done one and searching the board led me to believe that must be inletted from butt toward the muzzle.  I'm used to inletting from top down.  This seems sideways.  Any tips or recommendations? Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Thawk,
The Lehigh buttplate is a "sheath style", in that there is a draft filed on the buttplate return that is inlet into the wood instead of on top of.  I find it easiest to rough cut the stock closely to the profile and work the buttplate down and forward at the same time.  When you are at the right depth (with the buttplate return slightly below level of the stock), then you can move it towards the muzzle to the correct LOP.  Go slowly and use lots of lamp soot as you move forward.  The images below should help, and I have a list of details to pay attention to when building Lehigh rifles on my website:

Thanks Eric! I have a little bit of clean up on the butt plate yet to do before I inlet it.  I will definitely post pics of this one when completed.
