My hog rifle

Inspired by Ken G. and Keith L., I had to give it a go. The barrel was purchased from a member here and is a Bobby Hoyt, 50" long, originally .40 something caliber, is now .50, (we have big hogs here), swamped, I filed off about .050" all around at the muzzle end to lighten it up a tad. The lock is an L&R small Manton, modified a bit. Stock was from a walnut blank also purchased from a member here. I made the pipes, patch box, and forged out, pined and brazed the butt plate and trigger guard.
It is not without a few bugaboo's but would appreciate any thoughtful critique's. I'll try to answer any questions anyone might have. This was a great project and I will make another, hopefully sooner than later. It is really nice to hold and shoots very accurately. I spent a good part of last weekend blowing up milk jugs and drilling holes at 100yards. ;D









I also made the bag and horn in a style I thought was fitting.

Robby,one cannot call a "hog rifle" pretty so I call it handsom. ;D

I like it allot....especially the the trigger guard.

It looks like you did a moulding along the bottom of the upper forearm.  I can't see it well in the pictures.  What did you do there?  I know the barrel is long but your forend treatment really slims it out and make it look even longer.....is it just the light.......what ever it is, nice!

One long, lean rifle.

Love everything about it.  The long grip rail on the Bull style TG fits well with the long barrel.  Any Bugaboo's belong with it.  She's a fine rifle gun.

Like it. Nice work all around. Great color. Love the quard. Big ,fat lock  panels, but that's very typical on this style of gun. You gave it much better than a go. Squirrel rifle next I say.

Nice rifle gun.    ??? with what appears to be excessive negative pitch I am thinking about handling recoil and if your hogs are real nasty I'm thinking that 80-90 grains over a tight patched ball is gogga make you stop laughing in Church. Hopefully I am wrong but please give us a range report about how it shoots and if recoil is  an issue

JDK, I think the shape of the forestock would be called an 'ogee', its kind of a double 'S' curve.

greybeard, I'm not sure what you mean by negative pitch? Whatever style gun I make, I try to taylor it so recoil, large or small, will push the stock directly straight back, or down and away from the face.  I have been shooting 90gr's FFF, .490ball, .025"denim patching, off the bench, and off hand, with a summer shirt on, It gives me no problems, kind of like a 22 magnum. It is a very accurate gun and a pleasure to shoot.
The next town six miles east of me, Lima N.Y. now has wild hogs. The D.E.C. say kill them all, use whatever you want, anytime, just wipe them out. I'm on a mission. ;D

Pitch is irrelevant when the rifle is shot off the arm.
This buttplate design is not intended to be shouldered like a shotgun butt.

 ::)The Brits cured that "shooting off the arm"with a sensible stock design. It's a shotgun butt plate that looks good and not real hard to install when making the rifle.

She looks great!  I too like the trigger guard.  Veyr stylish and adds to the long lean look.  Color is great.  All around great job.

Robby, thanks for the additional forestock picture.  That's what I thought I was seeing.

Did you see this treatment on an original or is it something you came up with?

Which ever, it works.  It really slims down the rifle and makes the barrel seem like it goes on forever.

I echo McClary that the lock is on the "right" side.  Love the long lean look and you did a great job with the guard and the butt plate.  I am waiting on an Ed Rayl 50 inch long swamped barrel in .50 caliber to do a build.  Now I can hardly wait.  Excellent job on all aspects.
