Spit, Well or Distilled Water?
« on: May 30, 2012, 09:42:35 PM »
I never liked sucking on a cloth patch so I usually used some sort of moose milk, Winchester Sutler's brand or homemade using Ballistol and water.  Then I got wise and figured my well water might be high in sodium like a friend's well is so I switched to distilled water in my moose milk mixtures.  ...Now I'm wondering what might be in my own saliva?

Do you guys think one is better than the other? Or is it basically the same whether spit, well water or distilled water for a patch lube?

I've tested several different "Spit" lubed patches and yes there is a difference. I drink nothing
but distilled water, my friend Dwayne drinks a lot, my other friend drinks nothing but wine.
Out of the three different "Spits" Dwayne's shot the tighter group. Could be something to
the saying "Old Group Tightner".  I ask him in the really important matches if he would lube
my patches, and he said he would. Hey, what are friends for?

Must be something to those rum soaked patches! Probably a good way to sterilize  good old Chinese cotton. :o ;D

...hmmm    So if I've got tobacco in my mouth then I've basically got an alternate form of saliva?  Great, now I've got more things to ponder.

I guess I'll just prelube patches with distilled water.  It's only $0.85 / gal and that way I won't waste my tobacco juice- that snuff stuff is getting expensive.

I don't think a little sodium in your well water is going to hurt your moose milk, especialy if you're just shooting at the range. There are enough salts in black powder that what little comes from your well water shouldn't hurt anything.

Remember Helut Barr, LB- rotted his .54 barrel with his Brandy patches. Too bad he used them for hunting.  BTW - th4re was no brandy in them by the time they were loaded. He'd put a few in his mouth for the upcomming shots.
