Rear lock panel shape?

Would someone be so kind as to tell me,or show a photo, of what the rear end of the lock panelshould look like if one is using a f/l with a squared-off rear such as the Davis late English.   Have never used such a lock in 35 yrs of piddling/building.  Thank you very much.

THANKS  i thought as much Squared off panel in rear would look odd  I thought.

Here is a good shot of a Leman with a square tail lock that is nicely done. Obviosly the profile is slightly different but it works for me. I have a similar lock to this example but I like the way this looks better.

Dave B, thanks for the illustration.

In the photo above, notice that the panel is made with respect to the lock shape. The panel is shaped to complement the lock shape, rather than echo it. The panel gradually widens to the rear. It is these subtle shapings that create visual interest.

Also depends on the type of rifle your are building.  Here is a link to a few photos of an oriignal East TN gun with such a lock (although converted to percussion) - notice the abrupt change from the curved upper molding to the straight  underside of hte molding at the tail of the lock, and the angular junction of this rear molding with the bottom of the stock, which looks quite flat through the trigger/lock mortise area -

I did one like this based on a British Sporting rifle.


These have smaller flats than some but I think that anything that looks good will work and be correct.

I thank each one who answered most kindly-examples more varied than I expected.  Stock is Pecatonica N C and panel is waaay oversized..  I have room to do most any.                       regards JWL
