PA gunsmith in 1760?
« on: June 29, 2012, 05:32:12 AM »
I'm looking for anyone who knows of a PA gunsmith, named William Miller and whose wife was Sarah Cooper Miller. He lived in the region near Hanover and nearby to the Susquehanna River during the period of about 1735 through 1773. Moved down to NC by 1775 and had joined the Colonial Militia by that time.  Don't know if he continued his trade there in NC or not. Can't find any records to confirm his trade in either place.  Looking for what "longrifle school" he followed and any tax documentation that shows he was actually making guns. Unclear if he was a Master or perhaps an Apprentice.
Thanks for any hints you can offer.
Yours,
JAK

There is a William G. Miller listed in the Upper Susquehanna book. Could this be him?

A quick check on ancestry.com shows a William Miller,jr. married to a Sarah Cooper(1760) as being born in Hanover,Susquehannah Cty., Penn. aprox.1735 and died in 1784 in Hanover,Beaver Cty.,Penn.His wife Sarah is listed as dieing in 1760.I can find no record of him serving in the Revolutionary war although his son Israel did and is shown in the 1800 census as living in Greenville,N.C.

In a 1967 application for DAR membership the references list Miller Family Records as being held by Edmund Miller of Greenville,NC at that date.
