Horn Whistle ?
« on: September 04, 2012, 05:24:42 AM »
I was surprised to find in a collection of old stuff some friends of ours received at the death of a family member a Horn Whistle. She loved to collect old things and the tag says 18c horn whistle
I didn't have my camera but will see about getting some pictures posted. Part of it has been turned down and pierced for a string. It would look perfect in a shot pouch. The maker plugged the open end with wood and pined it in place with a iron pin. Have any of you seen one of these?

These whistles are not at all uncommon. They seem to range in age from the Rev War period up to probably 1900 and didn't change much during that time. Some were made of bone and even ivory and these seem to be the least common. Some of these whistles seem to turn in in hunting bags, and were probably used in the field. They apparently were in use during the Civil War as well. Some appear to have been factory made and it is possible that the horners made them along with powder horns and aother items. Please post the photos when you can.

I did a search on E-bay for horn whistles and this is almost Identical to the one my friends have.

Dave Rase built a couple horn whistles. You can see them at this link.
