If you have an extra barrel for a future project, how do you store it? Any special treatment?

I use RIG gun grease from Brownells, Inc. It is designed for long term storage. Works great, coat the inside of the bore really well, put some on the threads at breech plug, put it back in and leave the outside alone. The bore will not rust !!

I also RIG  for long storage; but I don't know why. I have never had any  problem or rust  with my usual Clenzoil  (or  RIG).

I have been using automatic transmission fluid lately. I have not had any rust, but I have only had these barrels in the basement for a couple of years. Got the idea from earl landing when he posted on here. I use a bunch of it and have storage the barrels horizontally.

I coat them well with RIG, then wrap them in shrinkwrap. Have some been in storage over 10 years & got one out the other day & unwrapped it, wiped it down, still bright & new as the day I put it away.  They are stored vertical in a cheap small metal gun locker you get at any sporting goods store.

I just lean them in a corner.  No fuss at all.  My shop has decent climate control so I'm sure that helps.  The bores seem to stay perfect.  Sometimes a small bit of oxidation on the exterior, but I couldn't care about that.

Cosmoline for long term.  Recently unpacked some steel parts mfg'ed almost a century ago, they were stored in very poor conditions for a long time but still in perfect condition.  High film strength hydrolytically stable synthetic oil for short term.

Same here. I've got barrels been leaning in the same corner since the 90's. :/
