16Ga Smoothbore advice
« on: September 05, 2012, 05:34:42 AM »
Gentlemen, I need some advice on what size of round ball mold I should try to find for a 16ga smoothbore. The barrel will have a .662 bore. I have ordered the barrel and it is a ways out yet but I want to be prepared. Thanks, Bob

Long Ears,

I have a Colerain 16 bore.  Supposed to be .660.  About the only thing I have found so far in a cast ball is .648 round balls.  They fit pretty tight with a thin patch.

I'd like to have a .640 mold made.  Think that might be perfect for my gun.

Good luck.

Yes - I'd use .648's as well. To test this size, trackofthewolf dot com sells them in a bag of 25 pure lead balls.

I used a .645 mold for a 16 bore that I had.
