Sighting in smoothbore

Helping a friend sight in a new smoothbore, .62 calibre. Got it to shoot a 2" spread at 25 yards but when we shot at 50 yards it was 5" high. This surprised us, as we thought it would shoot lower. Any thoughts? Thank you.

When talking smoothbore, I allways assume no rear sight? If no rear sight I would think the gun would have to be shot a lot to get used to it. For me anyway. chuck

"we"?
are you both shooting it? that would complicate interpretation of the targets/load.
Probably (how would i know?) should develop a better load at 25. 2" automatically gets you 4 at 50, and i hear that those things will do better than that...most especially with a rear sight. or i could be wronge. i was once before.

My smoothbore has a rear sight and was around 7" high at 50 yards. I just filed the rear sight down until it hit on target at 50yds. It always did fine at 25 just as yours did.
