Sheet Brass Source
« on: October 11, 2012, 01:02:17 AM »
Can any of you guys give me a source for sheet  brass that will match the butt plates and TG's supplied by Reaves Goehring?  I need the material to make the patchbox, thembles, and nose cap for a future project.  I think I am looking for 70/30 brass.  Any info would be of help.

Roger,
I think basic 260 alloy brass is what you're looking for. Here are the specs from another site:

"The standards for Alloy 260 brass call for 68.5 to 71.5 percent copper, 28.5 to 31.5 percent zinc and no more than 0.05 percent each of iron and lead. In practice the ratio of copper to zinc is rounded off to 70-to-30, so that the alloy is often referred to as "70/30 brass."

Hope this helps.

I got some nice 1/8" thick 260 from these folks: http://www.sheffieldsupply.com/

The catalog is way out of date, and while I believe that the prices were pretty reasonable when I ordered back in 2008, it would be a good idea to call before ordering.

I've bought from both Track of the Wolf and Muzzleloader Builders Supply. They both sell small quantities, (4" x 8"sheet). If you can get by with something as thin a .032, a brass door kickplate from Lowe's will make a lot of inlays.

I once worked for a door company and saved all the door plates that came in on old doors. Most that I have found ages into a redder color of brass and does not match castings well at all.
