Shreckengost Halfstock
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:35:42 PM »
This rifle came from outside Macon Georgia.  I see no evidence of a break in the wrist, yet the wrist is
wrapped.  A very similar wrap is on a gun by George King (also from western PA) in the book Gunsmiths of Western PA Vol 1 by Dr. Whisker.  You will see templates for these wrist wraps in the Shreckengost
tools section in ALR.  http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=12919.0  I believe Shreckengost did the wrist wrap on George King's rifle.  This gun has 2 tear drop shaped inlays between the toeplate and trigger guard and Wm's standard
tulip heads on the forearm plate.  Unfortunately none of his engraving is present.  About 32 caliber.  Appears
to have once had a target or lollipop sight in the tang.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

I would think a wrist wrap like that would have taken considerable effort and skill to apply. What material and thickness is the wrap? Is there an identical wrap on the opposite side?

The wrap is mirrored on the other side which makes an interesting look from the top and bottom.
coin silver, same thickness as an average inlay.  I don't know how you would wrap and inlet
that.  It would be tough on those curves.  The screw is not present on the other side so I think
it was added later, maybe because it wanted to pop out.  Based on the different templates for
these wraps, I assume he did several of them, but the only other one I have found is on the
George King rifle.
