i am going to refinish my .40 caliber. i will be using Homer Danglers stain and was thinking of useing just a wax finish over that and was wondering how well it will protect the wood. has anyone here finished a gun in this way,any tips you can give me or am i asking for trouble...thanks!

What kind of wood and what kind of finnish is presenty on the gun?

the wood is maple,and i believe the clear coat is Formbys

I've heated the stock wood over coals and applied beeswax. The wax soaks into the hot wood, and once cool, is impervious to water.

Wax is certainly impervious to water but is not as stable as varnishes.  Wax does not cross link and I wonder if it could possibly cook out in the heat.  Might it need to be renewed now and again?

Forget what I said above.  The other thread covers all this in detail.  It does not cook out.
