ALR Museum and Library after 3.5 years

The ALR Museum and Library after 3.5 years has been a major success as a resource for Kentucky RIfles students, collectors and enthusiasts. It now contains thousands of detailed, color photographs of over 600 original Kentucky rifles with appropriate and instructive expert commentary. Additionally the Library houses many original research manuscripts and resource links to many new and important subjects for the student and researcher. It is probably the largest and most readily available resource on the subject today...and it continues to grow.

I want to thank Hurricane, Nord and the Museum Committee for all their time and effort in creating and maintaining this extraordinary resource.  Where else do you have access to so many photographs of amazing longrifles at your fingertips?  And how about the Upper Susquehanna ebook -- what a great concept.

I am grateful for the dedication and energy of these individuals for the benefit of so many of us.  Thank you.

Thank you all! Fred and I appreciate your kind comments more than I can say.

I've begun to "expand" our reach to parties unused to our unique firearms. As some here may know, I moderate the Antiquegun forums. In the past we've seldom discussed or mentioned items pre-dating mass produced firearms. Now I'm beginning to sense interest in our long rifles.

As of today I've displayed both the Shillito and a William Lloyd added to the AG roster. Depending upon the interest level over there I'll continue to post rifles from time to time and to promote the Virtual Library and Museum.

As always your comments and thoughts will be appreciated.

I find this site to be a fantastic resource.
Having only been interested in this field for 3+ years, I'm confident my learning curve has been shortened by decades having access to this information and the network of fine folks who participate here.

This website was a stroke of genius by two individuals who are of undoubted genius class. Both foresaw the value of the topic and worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition, as a public service with no recompense asked, or expected. The education value is enormous and so, let's all participate by sending in photos of newly found items, spread the word to everyone you know, and comment on what is presented at every opportunity. This is a personal collection for you and you don't even have to spend a dime to acquire it.

What I like the most about the library is the detail quality of most of the photos.  I have several books and the major ones like "Thoughts"  and RCA are great but often lack the detail I would like to see due to the age of many of the photos.  I'm sure the amount of time and effort that it takes to make the system work is substantial.  All we see are the excellent results and too often forget to say thank you so, Thank You, your efforts are truly appreciated. Its a unique resource and repository in which to document this American treasures. It will have even more value to future generations. Lets do everything we can to get pictures of as many guns as possible. I wish the KRA would look into putting more of their work on the web. The cost is so much les than the printed word and it can be available to a much bigger audience even if password and copy protected and available on a reasonable fee basis.

Tim,

After saying what you said...

1. You may become a heretic to a few.

2. Your idea is sound in the opinion of many, both KRA and non KRA.

3. Many here are members of KRA.

Might I suggest we as a group make this an issue? Mind you, I'm not suggesting in a confrontational nor mean spirited way. After all, we all share common interests and should work to a common goal.

For those who wish to share their collections, the web is now a wonderful way to do it. Using ScribD or other web publishing software even from Google, images and articles can be put on the web so they can be enjoyed but not copied (without a lot of expensive effort anyway) Photos can also be watermarked to protect them.  Ownership does not have to attributed, just as it isn't here in the Library.

For those who want to keep their collections private, I respect their right to do so even if I don't understand it. I show off the guns I have every chance I get.... and they are not even great works... so many people are hungry to see and know more about the first American art form.

CLA now makes some of the American Traditions magazines available to paid members on a password protected site.  I would certainly be willing to pay for web access to well done photographs of original guns especially if the money were going to help the KRA foster collecting, and I think many others would as well. Web pages are so much easier to keep up to date than DVDs and printed material.

I agree, I think a considerate discussion might help us find a way for there to be a win-win solution.

Bruce, "The Committee",  and I wish to thank everyone for their comments. It has been our pleasure to help add to everyone's knowledge and establish this repository of art and history for all.We can only hope that more viewers will continue to support this effort of the whole student and collecting community by sending us more gun photos and commenting on the guns, benefiting all!

Adding my heart felt THANK YOU gentlemen for producing a great resource. I browse the library constantly and its contents have been useful in the extreme in my gaining a growing knowledge and understanding of what makes a longrifle and its history more than just a gun. Just last evening I was studying the makers and history of the Lancaster and Burks county schools while attempting to relate it to the build I am involved with currently. I gained insight into longrifle architecture, decoration, carving designs and as I continued to research I began to wonder "Who compiled this, it must have taken ages to amass such a database." I began then to note the user names Hurricane and Nord predominated throughout the site and thought to myself "These folks are dedicated, or, maybe obsessed is a better word..."

And I'll tell you - the library, along with the kindly and expert advice I have received on my build is a huge part of why I recently contributed a sum to ALR. I want this site to thrive. There is simply no other site like it.

You have met a need gentlemen, and well met it is. Again, thank you.

I hadn't poked around in the museum for a while now. Wow, that thing has grown. Huge thanks from myself and posterity for this service.
