Track of the Wolf Bucks County rifle kit - Update #1
« on: November 30, 2012, 03:14:37 PM »
This is my first update on building the Track of the Wolf, Bucks County flintlock rifle kit. In this update I'll disassemble the deluxe large Siler flintlock so I can inlet the lock plate into the stock.

Great stuff, and a service to all new inexperienced builders. Just think how cool it would be if the tutorial section had videos. This should be added to the tutorials. Thanks from me for all the beginners who can use this video. I remember how intimidated I was the first time I disassembeled a lock. Too pictures of every step.

That's pretty neat. Bring it on!

Yours is well lit and video'd, good quality job. I like it.

Links to video tutorials seem pretty easy to post within a tutorial. Hurrah for computer technology.

I know with photobucket, sometimes the links to the photos are lost, and then the photo does not appear in the posting anymore. I don't know how stable YouTube is. Perhaps a computer guy could chime in on that.

Thats a wonderfull idea. Video and voice is a sometimes more instructional. Perhaps some of our more learned colleges here will consider filming a few tutorials and post them on YouTube with a link here to spark interest in others to do likewise. It's a fairly simple process to upload a video to YouTube. Lots of folks are doing it on many subjects that would appeal to ALR members.

In the lock mortice right under where the tumbler should be, there is what appears to be a crack.  Is that the case?  A couple of years ago, I purchased a precarved stock and had the lock mortice pre inlet.  There was a hairline crack in the mortice just forward of the breach face.  And that's where the stock eventually broke.  I will never have that work done for me again.

Hope I'm wrong.

Nope...no crack...must be a trick of the light.

Hi Oddnews. I was firelock for decades before Bottom Dealin' Mike. I try to devide my time between the 18th century and the 19th century.

Thank you.  I'm doing my first build now.  I was glad to see someone else use tape to keep track of the parts.  I also lable the parts as I take them off the lock and tape them to cardboard.  Keeps them from wandering off.  Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.  Oh, when my stock arrived there were what I thought were three burn marks from the inletting machine; only one was.  The other two were in the lock inlet and when I LIGHTLY sanded to remove them I found that I had three bad holes.  I did get them fixed, however.

Regarding cracks in new or any stock...the nylon wedges from a car lock jimmy kit with spacers if needed to spread it ( GENTLY! and just enough to deepen the penetration )  plus a double plunger tube of five minute clear epoxy will permanently and invisibly fix those little cracks and chips. Mix the goop on a piece of cardboard and dab it in with a Popsicle stick, remove wedges, apply a little pressure, wipe the excess, wait 15 min(I know it says 5 min on the tube but trust me)sand, then try to find the crack. I used the same method to repair a chip out of a box I carved for my daughter (the artist)  and asked her to find the piece of wood that didn't grow here..she couldn't. The stuff flows in and bonds stronger than the wood and its thin and clear so it will match well.TY

Many glues won't take stain, and prevent the stain from coloring wood that has glue soaked into it....so if the area to be glued will also be stained, it's good to color the glue, and possibly pre-stain the area before gluing.
