when doing incised carving with a parting chisel, is it easier to tap the chisel or push it by hand?

Carving method is such a personal choice. Some use a mallet to tap along(moi), some push by hand (Taylor), and some use a knife(Bill Shipman). I don't know how Eric Kettenburg works, but his site is worth studying for its incised work.
