Cheyenne style Medicine bag..
« on: February 27, 2014, 09:28:37 AM »
This is a special piece for a very special young lady who is my best friend's oldest daughter - I was asked (by her Mom) to make a "medicine" bag for her 20th birthday. The bag is meant for keeping an assortment of very personal keepsakes/heirlooms given to her by family and friends at the same time (called "medicine" in the parlance of the Plains Indians and mountain men) and so I came up with this piece which is based on an original Cheyenne pipe bag, but I decided to add to it some things I've been wanting to do and kind of took it over the top, but it was worth it..

The leather is braintan and the beadwork is 1840-50's style Cheyenne using 8/0 pound beads. Once constructed it was given an aged look The bag proper is about 14" x 7".
I'm often asked how long such a piece takes and normally I don't add up the hours, but on this one I did - total actual construction and aging time (not including breaks ) was 130 hours...but none of that mattered and it was well worth it when I got to see the smile on that young lady's face when it was presented to her... (I got a big hug too )
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Chuck, that is breath taking. You out did yourself. Beautiful color combinations that capture the eye. You did not take it over the top, but nailed it just right. The BT color is also perfect for that piece. That is pure art. Magnificent !!!

Chuck........A really neat bag, something I am not familiar with but I have looked at your stuff before, some outstanding work.
I know this is a dumb question, but, what is the "fur" that the bag is laying on?  ........Don

Thank you all for the kind words - I figure after 53 years of doing beadwork I just may have made my masterpiece (all down hill from here   ;D )

Don - the fur underneath is badger and the two on the sides are silver fox - you can see the whole fox hides on my website www.wrtcleather.com

Well, I'm out to lunch on the fur Chuck but I concur with all the others here, that that is a fabulous bag.  It would look good in my own tipi.

Chuck, you were born at leat 100 years too late.  Your work rivals any surviving pieces of Indian ragalia that I have ever seen.  This bag is not describable by mere words.  Congratulations on another great piece.

Mr. Burrows:
I am new to the list and just started doing beadwork of my own. I am awe-struck. That is absolutely beautiful. Absolutely.
