1st Pistol in the works, and a Virginia rifle

The pistol is a 62 cal. Georgian, the stock and barrel are from Muzzleloader Builders Supply. The lock is a large left Siler: about the only thing I could get in a timely/price right frame that is early enough for the style. I have rough shaped it to look somewhat more like a Queen Anne, but it still needs some work. It is a bit large for the piece but not too bad with the 62 barrel. The butt cap I swaged from sheet steel(not too easy). I made my own because the cast one just had a too much bulge at the base for me-pushes your hand back further from the trigger.
The early Virginia I just started as well and thought well I'm at it might as well post em...

Here is the pistol about done....


This is the first pistol I have built. It is a 62 caliber smoothbore with a reshaped left handed large Siler flintlock. The lock choice for a lefty was very limited. This lock is some what large for a pistol but works with the large barrel. I made the butt cap, trigger, and side plate with belt hook. The Polish falcon is pewter. All that's left is test firing and some burnishing.

The side plate on that rifle is WAY too big.   It needs to be slimmed down considerably.

The finish is nitric acid and refined linseed oil. Mark the side plate I made bigger on purpose. I saw one a lot like it that Jack Haugh had made and it just appealed to me

I did the same thing to the sideplate on my first rifle and got a lot of the same comments.  I understand the point they are making, but i was like you, there was just something I liked about it.

I decided to make my own double lever double set triggers for the Virginia rifle. They still need some reshaping on the triggers and some polishing. Over all the job was easier than I thought it would be.

Early Virginia rifle I just finished up. Purchased parts for this build where the early Ketland flintlock, Rice 44" 50 caliber b weight swamped barrel, butt plate, trigger guard, and screws. All of the other parts are hand made. The stock is curly maple that was shaped from a blank and finished with aqua fortis and refined linseed oil. The ramrod was split(not cut) from a hickory board to insure good strength, it has a tapered steel tip. All that is left on this build is some stock burnishing and test firing. Photos make the carving look a bit fuzzy, they aren't too bad. The burnishing and some sealer should help a lot.

I don't know how I missed a couple of the checkering lines behind the tang but I did. Fixed now. The pictures are a bit fuzzy. Comments please.
