Hardware Finish
« on: February 07, 2013, 11:51:53 PM »
Does anyone know what the black finish on the GPRs is? I'm re-doing one and want to brown the parts. Is there something that will strip it? I'll sand it if I have to, and probably will on some of it, but lots of nooks and crannies, not to mention the threads.

If it is blue, a soak in white vinegar will strip it (after degreasing).  Try it and see -- cheap experiment.

Best bet is naval jelly.  At your local hardware store.  Remove srust and blue.  No need to sand.  Rinse and wipe dry.

I've refinished a couple of great plains rifles and naval jelly will take the blue right off. Theirs also plenty of wood that can come off the cheek area, imho.

I've been scraping that cheek piece for awhile now, and ALMOST have it where I like it.
Thanks for the info on Naval Jelly.

I would have tried browning straight over the degreased bluing.  And still would, naught to lose.
