Help with fixing a missed underlug hole
« on: January 27, 2013, 12:32:14 AM »
Afternoon all,

I put in three perfect underlug pin holes but I screwed up on the fourth by an 8th inch. I need to fill a hole now in a way that i hope it will not show up too much. If there is a tutorial on this somewhere i would appreciate being pointed in the right direction. Otherwise, any of your advice on how to tackle this would be great. The stock is a very curly maple in case that makes a difference in how to address this.

I hope to post some pics soon on this first build of mine for some feedback on where I am so far and suggestions going forward.

Thanks all for the assistance. This forum has been fantastic.

I have used a round toothpick and elmer's glue.  After you stain it you won't see the mistake.  If anyone does notice tell them it's "patina" ;)

Thanks Snap, that makes sense. I do have a piece of the same wood for use in making a sliding patch box. There is more than enough to whittle a small peg from. I suppose a peg is probably the best way to go. Should have thought of that earlier.....

For a mostly invisible repair, carve your peg with the grain (the end of the peg that you'll see) going in the same orientation as the forearm wood.

Another option...  Plug your hole to full depth with a glued in toothpick and then cut a cat's eye shaped piece with proper grain orientation to overlay over the toothpick.

for an 1/8 inch I would be tempted to make a new wider underlug. Make it wide enough so that the cross pin hits it with enough meat to make the hole far enough off the edge to hold properly. (of course if you went under the lug this won't work)

Dennis, that's what I was going to suggest.
It's less work to make a wider underlug and re-inlet it than it is to try to hide the drilled hole. I just went thru this very problem, so it's fresh in my memory!

I just plugged the hole and redrilled the hole correctly. The judges at Dixon's never saw it. :D BJH
