I have an opportunity to purchase a flintlock longrifle with the name "J.E. Nuhfer" on the barrel. Anybody ever heard of this feller?

Is this an original or contemporary?  The reason I ask, there used to be a contemporary builder near Warren, PA named Nuhfer.  Ron

Looks like a gun made in the early to mid twentieth century. It isn't much earlier than that. Too many mixed styles and components; such pieces were made prior to Kindig's book which sorted out the 'schools' and their design elements.

It looks like a well used contemporary rifle to me, with some unusual wood additions/alterations to the lock and side plate area.
Also, there's no Nuhfer listed in either of Sellers Gunsmith books.

 That lock is a Dixie Gun Works lock. My N.C. poorboy has the same lock in it, except, that the frizzen was junk, and I replaced it, with one off of a Dixie F1 flintlock.

Good choice, since not many original antiques are stamped "Black Powder only" in front of the makers name stamp...it is a contemporary as I suspected...
