 I'm fascinated by the reversed patchbox. This is seen a lot in late percussion guns from California. It must have been a fad nationwide, maybe only seen a lot more in the west.

I have a number of Midwestern rifles with reversed capboxes.  They include two by Iowa makers, one by a Wisconsin maker, and seven by various Illinois makers.  I think it was more common than most of us realize.

If you were carrying the rifle and needed something out of the box, it would be handier if it opened like that.
