Can a cracked barrel be repaired?
« on: February 22, 2013, 06:15:45 AM »
I'm prepared for the scolding but here we go anyway, I have a nice small orginal rifle 13/16 on the flats, 30 cal. that I just aquired.  I dismantled it for a through check and found a 2 inch long crack at the breach (on the underside of barrel).  It's a nice little rifle and I hate to just wall hange it, soooo has anyone had or done a repair on a breach crack? could it be welded (heliarc). other option is to rebarrel with modern barrel but I though I'd ask if anyone has experance with this type of repair. OK have at me  :o  steg49

I agree with Dan. As far as using the barrel for restoring it for shooting  but in reality If you are set on shooting the rifle you may want to recreate the barrel with a new one and only use the original as is for show and tell and put in the new barrel when you are shooting it.  The liner installation is as costly as a new barrel any way.  Maybe the old barrel  could be welded up but stress cracks are past the point of failure why take the chance on hurting your self or some one else by trying to shoot it patched up?

Thanks for being kind, I hadn't thought of a barrel liner but the barrel is not worth that much effort, so now i'm in the market for a 13/16 small cal. (32 or smaller) barrel as a replacement.  steg49
