I first heard of the wire technique from my grandfather, who had a Wishon squirrel gun as a boy, that he said had been striped with a wire, as I described. He said it had an odd break in the striping, just behind the trigger guard, that years later, he figured out was where the wire had been spliced. He said it had been back lashed, just like a western union splice in electrical wire.

They're  "vanity" stripes I think perhaps Leman did it to the point of being known for it,as a lot of his clientele were native Americans with they're penchant for putting on a show, wether you were a young brave strutting for women or an older chief showing his prestige ,appearance was absolutely necessary and important as actual ability, men who worked in and around them needed to also use this strategy, and  guys who did'nt?-they needed to strut at times also, even if it was just to show it off to friends, like pin stripes - it just looks better.

Love that Trade-gun style (a.k.a.  early 18th/ late 17th century style) thimble on Aka Tailbear's rifle.

Circa 1947 - 54 Dad & Mom rented a house in Clymer, Pennsylvania. Our stairs had faux wood grain painted on them. Suppose they were pine, been awhile.
