Which Hawken Shop? There was one in St.Louis in the 1970's owned by Art Ressel
who was the owner of the remains of the Gemmer Estate. The locks made by the
Griffith brothers were good, useable locks.I made some locks and triggers for the Hawken shop as did
a friend of ours,Sid Estep. I think Al Schillinger might have made some for them as well.He did a good job
as I recall.

When George and his brother made them they were good locks. The Washington based Hawken shop was the third or maybe fourth generation of the Griffith lock. They did not improve as ownership changed. They roughly resembled the Modena lock but were oversized.
Art Ressel also had some locks made in India that he sold as English locks. Some of them were good and some internals were not properly hardened.

I am just completing a Hawken using the Griffith lock that I purchased years ago from the Hawken Shop, ( I think that I purchased it at Friendship in 1996 or 2000 from the Hawken Shop's booth). It is slightly larger than my other favorite locks, and it was perfect for the larger Hawken that I am building. The quality seems OK, strong springs and slightly different geometry than Rollers or L & R, and it fit the rifle very well. The bolster area on the top of the plate is slightly narrower than I would have liked and when cutting out the relief area for the patent breech I had to weld a plate on the bottom to prevent the spring from breaking through. I haven't shot it yet so I don't know how well it will work out in the long term, but so far OK. Good luck with yours.

Parts from the Washington shop,  I was looking they had lock,  hook snail breech and dbl set triggers and was wondering what quality they were, percussion breech shown had long threaded portion  I hate short plugs and price didnt seem too bad, on the parts,  but hard to tell looking at pics,  I never had any dealings with this company .

I havnt used any factory manufactured parts for years and have noticed things have really went up in price :o  like every thing else but wages
