Here are my thoughts on the matter. If you need to use really thick leather to carry a heavy load, you may want to rethink your strategy while out in the field. Most folks start out carrying far more than they need and it's a matter of trial and error, personal taste and individual needs that will determine what equipment and accessories go in the bag and what stays at home. Before then though, there's only so much you can stuff in the bag, even if you're planning on an overnight hunt and a 2 inch wide, 3-4 ounce leather strap is plenty strong so comfort would be my concern when choosing the right material and weight for a bag strap. Woven straps, if made correctly, are both strong and comfortable plus would save a little weight compared to leather.
