$3.00 Rifle! J. Hagey/Hagi/Haga
« on: February 26, 2013, 05:49:28 PM »
Right before Christmas I finished this rifle which someone will own for the $3.00 price of a raffle ticket at the NMLRA Gunmaker's Hall raffle this year.  ($2.50 if you buy two tickets for $5.).  It's on the cover of the March Muzzle Blasts but I thought I'd post some better photos.  It's stocked in a piece of hard maple stained with cast iron dissolved in nitric acid over a wash of tannic acid with Chamber's Oil finish.  The carving is derived from several Hagey rifles but primarily from the one currently in the Landis Valley Museum show with some modification of the design behind the cheek piece. The barrel is a 42" 50 cal. barrel that is essentially a "B" weight from Rice Barrel Co. that was rifled on the back porch of Gunmaker's Hall with a gain twist.  The lock is a standard Siler from Jim Chambers.  The guard is a later Dickert guard from Reeves Goehring and the buttplate is his #36.  I made all the rest of the mounts from sheet brass.  I color case hardened the lock and left the colors on and browned the barrel with a smooth plum color using diluted Gaddy's formula with short rusting times, i.e.,  no more than 2 hours.  The "old man in the moon" inlay is sterling. Mark Silver engraved the patch box, side plate and old man in the moon following fairly closely the engraving from original Hagey rifles while resolving some of the awkwardness that make Hagey's engraving less flowing than it might have been.  The rifle came in right at 8 lb.

Really nice.  I especially like the lock treatment.  Who did the case color work?

Great looking rifle. I'll definitely be buying tickets. You can't win
It if you don't have your name in the hat. The money also goes to
a good cause. Tom thanks for donating your time and skill. Mark also
did an excellent job on the engraving. Tim

Raffle tickets are available from the NMLRA office and were also printed in the March Muzzle Blasts.  I've been doing my own color hardened for the last five years or so.  I've done all my own locks as well as all those that Mark Silver has used in that time as well as some for some customers who want locks color hardened.  As for Hagey getting popular, I decided on this design about two years ago when I committed to doing the rifle for Gunmaker's Hall.  There are three Hagey (Haga) rifles in Kindig but this one was only photographed in the old KRA book.  You can see details of the rifle much better in the Landis Valley book that came out last spring.  I was glad to have that as I was doing the carving.

Beautiful rifle and great collaboration with Mark Silver on the engraving.  One of my best shooting buddies won the NMLRA rifle 2 years ago, so I am hoping that some of his luck rubs off on me and I can win this one.  His rifle was built by Dennis Priddy and it was also a beautifully crafted rifle.

Terrific rifle Tom!!  You didn't say, but I assume the touchhole is internally coned w/o a liner??

Hey I have a track record at wining raffles (1 awesome JP Beck) this would look good next to it!! That one cost me $20.00 for 2 tickets. Hmmm this one I can get 8 tickets for $20.00!!!  I'm liking this!!

John Haga signed his name Haga.

Kindig has a couple of examples.

They are signed Haga

Assorted tax records and one PhD misspell the name.

In the 1970's Larry Mrock made several Haga rifles for the Early American Society, copied from an original rifle which has not been published.

Nice job Tom!  Thanks for your work on this project.  Whether it be for the Gunmaker's Hall, CLA or another organization, it's pretty remarkable what individuals give.  This is particularly significant considering the fact that making a living doing this sort of stuff isn't what most would consider very lucrative.  Thanks again.

Let me second JBLK's request.  I no longer receive Muzzle Blasts, but would love to give them my money for a chance on this beauty.  Please post the address.
