Gilligan auction May 4th
« on: April 03, 2013, 11:54:07 PM »
Just a heads up to collectors, Ron Gilligans auction on May 4 in Pennsylavania Furnace, Pa has a good number of nice antique longrifles. They don't generally allow absentee bids, you have to be there. Their website has excellent detailed photos.

Where is "Pennsylvania Furnace" ?   I think Ron Gilligan operates out of Lewistown, Pa....Mifflin County.   I have a feeling that
Pa. Furnace might be in Huntingdon County?   Will have to  check his sale bill........Don

It's just South of State College Don. If you take White Hall Rd. South out of State college you will come to PA Furacein a few minutes.  Centre County.

Also forgot to mention, there is a good lot of original, first time for sale civil war items, I believe all of one officers items in incredible condition.  I see they also have some marked guns they can't identify, perhaps somone here can help. I have a suspicion there are some real hidden "gems" at this one.

There really should be some check on the unlearned auctioning guns about which they have 0 knowledge. Obviously Gilligan does indeed belong back on his island. One gun I can ID is signed W K and is Wm King, son of Chambers King from Kittanning, PA, area. King worked for a most disruptable chap about whom I did a recent article in Muzzle Blasts, James Eshton Willis (1827-1829). I note that even among military arms where most could work out model, etc., from Flayderman, Gilligan does not even bother to try. There is also a lower grade Huntingdon Co, PA, long rifle, which probably can be ID'ed. The attribution of maker based on lock name suggests Gilligan may have worked for Nat'l Parks "Service" or some museum. This wholly  discredited practice has long disappeared among 1st rate arms auctioneers. Bargains for those w/ knowledge = loss for those consigning to an ill-prepared auctioneer.

I agree, not much knowledge on the guns. They are a reputable auctioneer, just not too gun savvy. These types of sale are generally where something fantastic pops up, thats why I passed it along.  In these parts ( PA ), there is usually someone in the crowd that corrects the auctioneer when it comes to guns. This particular guy sells alot of modern guns, usually two sales a month. I suppose it may be the same in many areas, but Pa has tons of hidden treasures that often see the light of day at these little country auctions.  Its well worth the trip I think for anyone that is within a few hours drive. I will be there !

Did anyone on the forum attend the auction?   I was particularly curious about the Huntingdon rifle.

Jim,  Thanks for the heads up on the Kittanning (my home town) gun.  Unfortunately I was unable to attend
the auction due to a family wedding in Ohio today.  I would like to have bought it so, if whoever did buy it is
on this forum and wants to make a reasonable margin on it's sale, I would like to talk.

Does any forum member have the prices realized for the longrifles?
