Olde Eynsford Results
« on: May 06, 2013, 07:12:14 PM »

One picture (or 4) saves a thousand words so the photos pretty much tell the story.  3rd photo w/shot marked #8. was last shot on that paper and I actually held a tad higher, so that printed out of the 'group'  The Olde Eynsford needs more testing although I did fully expect it to shoot tighter in my 2 rifles that I used for the tests. When time and weather and cataract scraping allows I intend to shoot the Olde Eynsford with various charges up and down to see if it tightens up.  My disclaimer here (again) is that results may vary  and it may shoot great in 'your' rifles.  The powder appears to be slightly more evenly grained and a bit more satin finished than the regular Goex.   Very interested in results from you other folks out there in 'gun land'.    Fess up now.

Thanks for that range report Roger. Others may have different results but I will stick with my swiss untill more data is digested.

These tentative results tell me that OE is indeed a new powder and "different" from standard Goex.  It appears that tests with this powder need to start from the ground up.  Results from a few guns with a few shots won't do it.  But as the data rolls in over the next few months some conclusions are bound to surface as regards this powder in various calibers and types of ML firearms.

Roger,
That is a good start, but not really encouraging for OE.  The only thing I can think of is that if OE is close to Swiss in perkiness, it might be damaging the patches.  Even with humble Graf's 3f, I have to use fairly heavy denim patches (at least 0.022" maybe as much as 0.025" depending on measurement) or it starts burning "wet" patches with 50 gr. or more in both my .50 and esp. (the "new") .40 GM barrels.  Just an observation.

Also, my .50 actually prefers .490 balls to .495 with that patch/powder also.  There's no difference in loading, so I don't think it is bore roughness or cutting during loading at muzzle.  Still working on it -- bigger should always be better, but in this case not so far!

I need powder soon, so I will see if OE is available to test when I get some.  My .50 loves 2F (although I have a light/plinking target load with 3F for it) and my .40 so far seems to like 3F, although I haven't given it much choice yet :).

This doesn't surprise me really, when you change a component in the load combination your using your going to get different results ... that's a given.

You'll just have to start at the beginning and work up the the combination that works best with the new powder component you've introduced into the equation.

Due to their smaller (more Swiss like) screening sizes, if you're shooting Goex or KIK 2f now you'll want to use the 1.5 in Olde Eynsford. Conversely 3f goex will be closer to 2 f Olde E. 3f Olde Eynsford is some hot stuff and will need to drop the charge probably 10 grs from what you're using now if using regular grade 3f.

Went up to 75 Olde E and blew the group, dropped 5 grains then 10 then tighter and tighter finally 5 shots w/ 50 grains Olde and group tightened up nicely.... more later...busy busy!

Friend of mine shot some of the 2f Olde E out of his 54 flintgun, without changing the powder measure and shooting over the chronograph a 50 gr charge of regular goex and the same setting of Olde E sent the roundball 130 someodd feet faster than the plain Goex.
My old flintgun Klatch comes home after a 25 year vacation this June, looking forward to seeing what the ol bugger will do with this new powder.

Not muzzlestuffers, but 70 grs by volume in a 45-70 of the 2f throws a 530 gr bullet a touch over 1220 fps. 1.5 runs around 1180.35 grs of 2f in a 38-40 ,180gr bullet with 4 1/2 inch barrel went 960 fps avg over 25 rounds
Another friend put some 3f in a 44-100 behind a 500 gr patched bullet and got over 1500 fps :o
This stuff is some serious speed demon. Now if it can make accuracy...
