Engraving Horn
« on: May 11, 2013, 03:11:06 PM »
Many old horns have embellishment that seems to be engraved, not scratched into the surface. I have tired using some of my engraving tools for this, but it often leaves a cut that is a little ragged, especially across the grain. I tried heating the horn a little bit, and that seemed to help some, but it cools too quickly to really make much difference.

What am I missing here? Is there a specific technique to give a smoother cut ?

Peter, I'm not sure if 'engraving' is the right term for accomplishing your end. I have carved many horns in low relief using small chisels, in skew and straight, that I fashioned from concrete nails and mounted in doweling. When combined with scratching or scrimshawing it gives quite an effect.
