Jos. Bogle Rifle
« on: May 17, 2013, 04:41:37 AM »
Moving slowly on this project, but finally got the patch box inletted. Does anyone know how the original rifle's release is made? From the pictures in the library it's obvious the button is in the crescent of the butt plate, but I'm wondering about the spring for the release. It almost looks like a coil spring? The lid raising spring looks massive. Looks like there is not much room for anything else, definitely not a snickers bar. There is a wad of tow in the box in the photo of the original. I wonder if the marks from the drill are visible underneath?

I sent an email to the current Joe Bogle, he may come on and answer your question, he has built a bunch of "Bogle" rifles in the last few years.

I think this will answer your question.   It is just like any other release, just in a different direction.

From the picture, looks like you'd push in on the button to release the PB lid, and the release catch would be its own spring.

The gigantic spring might or might not be original so I wouldn't worry about it, unless your making an exact copy. If you look closely at the spring wear pattern on the inside of the door, it doesn't argue strongly for the spring being original.

Of course anything is possible,,,

I agree with John on the lid spring.   I would suggest a lid spring with a neat rolled end that could contact just above the hinge.   That is what the wear pattern indicates to me.   The latch spring arrangement couldn't be easier;  it has a single leg that can be nailed or screwed in place.  I normally use a V spring where I am pushing it from the heel or toe which is definitely more trouble to inlet.

Thanks guys for the replies. I do think I'll do a smaller lid spring. I'm not trying an exact copy, but trying to keep it in the same style. I wish now I had used a different lock, or at least made my own plate. Should have made my own triggers, having a hard time getting the off the shelf triggers to look right in that wide bow on the guard but too late now. I guess that is part of the attraction of building. For me, is each one is a unique learning experience. I always hope the next one will be better.
