Huhnstock Pattern 1776 Rifle
« on: July 08, 2013, 02:08:53 AM »
All,

Hello! I discovered this post regarding a Huhnstock P76 rifle in a UK-based forum:

 http://www.mlagb.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1307921843

Huhnstock was contracted to build the first 200 P76 rifles for the British army for use during the AWI (Bailey, British Military Flintlock Rifles).

I hope someone here knows the gent that owns the Huhnstock Pattern 1776 rifle built and/or knows who built it as I would very much like to acquire the parts to build my own.

   Thanks!

Matt

I believe the parts to build the rifle pictured were acquired here:
http://www.therifleshoppe.com/catalog_pages/english_arms/(509).htm
They also have a drawing of the rifle available:

From your post I am guessing that you are new to this, if not I apologize for the following:

If you are new to building a rifle from a "kit" be aware that these are parts only kits with no instructions.  All the metal parts except the barrel are rough castings and need extensive work before assembly.  The stock will be pre-carved but still needs a lot of shaping and fitting.  You have to do the research to learn what the rifle should look like and what skills you will need to build the rifle.   There are a number of "how to build a longrifle" books that are a good start and this site is full of people that will help when you get stuck.  My first build was a similar parts kit from The Rifle Shoppe.  It sat in a closet for 5 years because 1) I was overwhelmed and 2) did not have the time.  It takes a lot of hours to build one of these, but it is immensely rewarding when you do.

All the best

NEW WEBSITE! www.mikebrooksflintlocks.com
Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Gents,

I am new to building flintlocks but I'd say I'm somewhat experienced using them. I had a Caywood Trade fusil as my first flinter at 18 as well as have used a Pedersoli Bess and a TRS Pistor Jaeger.

Currently I am acquiring the tools to begin building my own. With regards to literature, I've read "The Gunsmith of Greenville County" and "The Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle".

Mr. Brooks, I took a look at your photos - very nice - and reviewed the TRS catalog in case I missed something. I believe the P76 on your website and the parts offered by TRS are for the English version that has different butt shaping, lock, buttplate and triggerguard and lacks a box (patch box). The last three photos in the hyperlink are of the Germanic P76.

My curiosity is piqued, if the Germanic parts aren't available or there wasn't access to the original, how could someone make the furniture? I figure the rod, pipes barrel, and swivel could come from TRS...

That looks like a real hunting rifle.    Tom
