Early guns with beveled edges on the side plate need about 1/8 in.thick side plates. Your toe plate should be between .040 and .062. Late guns with flush fitting side plates can be thinner. Hope this helps. BJH

anywhere between 3/32 to 1/8 is sturdy. Thinner than that, it's hard to inlet without bending.

Most toe plates I have seen and made are thinner, about .06 down to .04.

On my guns, that answer is that "it depends".    As a general rule. I make the side plate .125" (.0625" bevel) on 18th century guns and .090" (.032" bevel)  on 19th century guns.   The toe plates, if there is one,  are usually .0625", but the ones that are used as pressure plates for the patchbox release are .032" or thinner.

The brass sideplates are .125 thick w/ the bevel over half the thickness. On LRs the toeplate is .062 thick brass, but on Hawken rifles it's steel and 1/8" thick.  Have a question...what 1/8" thick  brass sheet dims do you buy" Have been buying from TOW and the "sheets" yield a lot of waste because of the sideplate dims....Fred
